July - August 2016

VACD FINANCIALS:

Our financial accounts for the Australian financial year 2015/16 ending June 2016 have been signed off and will be posted on the “Australian Charities and Not for Profits Commission” (ACNC) portal shortly. Our analysis show that around 87 cents of every Dollar received benefited our VACD children and their families directly and indirectly.  The balance 13 cents was absorbed by legal and administrative expenses due to the relocation of the VACD Centre in Bandarawela and administrative costs associated with the expansion of our activities into Mahiyangana, Welimada and Badulla. Administrative costs are likely to remain around 10 to 13 cents in every Dollar until the new centres are fully functional and equipped. You can review our financials by visiting the ACNC webpage:  https://charity.acnc.gov.au/

FUNDRAISING:

Poker Nite

The 9th consecutive annual Poker Nite organised by Kumar Palghat and his Kapstream Capital team was held on July 21st, with the night’s collections being donated to VACD.

COLLABORATIVE PARTNERSHIPS:

AuSLMAT

We are delighted to announce our collaborative partnership with “Australia Sri Lanka Medical Aid Team” (AuSLMAT), an organisation established in 2005 comprising of a team of volunteer medical professionals who visit Sri Lanka regularly to provide medical services to the needy. They recently donated a large consignment of neurosurgical equipment to the Badulla District hospital,  where our VACD children receive medical attention.  They previously donated an operating microscope to the same hospital.

Please visit http://www.auslmat.com.au/  or visit the VACD webpage: http://www.vacd.org.au/ and using the drop-down menu “Partners” log onto “ Australia Sri Lanka Medical Aid Team” for more information on AuSLMAT.

Mind for Life

We are also delighted to announce our collaborative partnership with  “Mind for Life”, a not for profit organisation comprising of a team made up of a Psychologist, Counsellor, Hypnotherapist, Life Coach and Holistic Therapist who aim to help people dealing with obesity and mental health issues.

Mind for Life will be officially launched on Sunday 11th September 2016 with a fundraising Health Seminar and Workshop at the Ryde & Parramatta Golf Club located at 1156 Victoria Rd, West Ryde.  Please phone the event coordinator Sam on her mobile 0432 712 734 or via her email: This email address is being protected from spambots. Make some Change

Our collaborative partners “Make some Change” are in the process of upgrading/modifying their fund raising platform and have placed a temporary pause on the existing program. The new platform is envisaged to be launched in early 2017. We will update you with news of the new platform no sooner we have it.

ONGOING PROGRAMS

The Vocational Training Program has received a boost as a result of a donation of two used computers, and the leadership team in  Sri Lanka are currently making arrangements for our children to receive computer training.  We are still in need of several more computers to make this program more effective.

Educational Assistance Program – On the weekend of 6th and 7th August, Professional Counsellor/Psychotherapist Dr Chaminda Weerasiriwardane counselled and advised parents and guardians of VACD children as to how best they should nurture, protect, assist and guide their children with disabilities making maximum use of the facilities extended to them by VACD, in particular the Educational Assistance Program (EAP).

The extension of VACD activities and the opening of centres in Badulla, Mahiyangana and Welimada would naturally increase the number of children who meet the eligibility criteria to be enrolled into the EAP program. We are in urgent need for more sponsors under the EAP.  With a  commitment of A$20 or SL Rs.2000 per month (5 cups of coffee in real terms!) a sponsor can ensure a more hopeful future for a child whose education would otherwise be cut short due to financial constraints.

The success of this program is borne out by the achievement of a young lad Nadun Maduwantha who received the EAP allowance (as a result of his sibling Nirasha Deepanjalee who suffers from attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) not having the potential to achieve academic excellence) doing well academically and joining the Sri Lanka Army. He now takes care of his sister’s needs and supports his mother (single parent and sole bread winner after their father passed away)

FORTHCOMING PROJECTS

Plans are under way to organise a painting and drawing competition for school children in the Uva province, to  be held in collaboration with the Department of Education to mark the UN’s World Disabled Persons’ Day.  This competition should  assist school going children, their families and local communities to focus on the plight of children with disabilities, and the need to eliminate and dispel myths, social isolation, discrimination and vilification faced by these children and their families and their need to be accepted as equals into the broader community.

PARALYMPICS APPEAL

We have received an appeal from Matt Levy, silver medalist at the London 2012 Paralympics, who is seeking assistance to raise funds for the upcoming Rio Paralympics.  Matt is a champion swimmer who has overcome incredible odds after having being born premature, and is legally blind and has cerebral palsy.  Please visit https://www.gofundme.com/k9e6swqc/ and lend a helping hand to one of our Champions!!!.

As always, thank you for your support and God bless you and your loved ones…Yasmin
