Respecting, Valuing, and Upholding the Rights of Children with Disabilities
VACD’s goal is to enrich the lives of children with disabilities in the poorest provinces of Sri Lanka, by providing them with infrastructure & resources, supporting their development, teaching them skills to enable independent living, empowering them and their families to be accepted as equals and integrated within their local communities.
What Do We Do?
Health & Rehab
We facilitate the provision of regular health checkups, therapy, and rehabilitation services for our children with disabilities at our VACD centres and local hospitals and assist them to obtain specialist treatment when required. We also provide the children that attend our centres with a daily nutritional meal.
Economic Support
We provide skills training and micro finance to parents of children with disabilities to supplement their household income and financial support for families under significant financial stress.
Education
We provide specialist education, life skills and vocational training, computer literacy, music, dance, art, singing and sports training for our children at all our centres and monthly allowances for educational purposes for disabled children with academic potential or gifted siblings.
Advocacy
We engage with the local communities, businesses, the medical fraternity, and local government agencies to address issues relating to discrimination, sexual. emotional and physical abuse, social isolation, stigma etc. to uphold and promulgate the rights of children with disabilities and their families. Our Young VACD club members are the most influential advocates in this challenge.
Training & Support
Our VACD centers provide children and parents with a variety of life and vocational skills including leadership, advocacy, self-reliance. We also provide parents and children with special training at seminars, workshops and health & rehabilitation camps.
